Those companies that refuse to talk will be the target of global consumer boycotts organized over the Internet, so there is a great deal of incentive for industry to clean up its act. At first glance, this strategy looks promising. It contains elements of both engagement and coercion, two ingredients absolutely necessary for any successful collaborative enterprise, however paradoxical that may seem. It looks like a classic “win-win” strategy. However, it seems utterly inconceivable that we can expect to make a meaningful dent in our common ecological woes if we reduce our concept of effective political action to a more selective breed of consumerism, which by definition limits our field of vision.

Collaboratives are a response to dysfunctional environmental strategies and policy processes, but are also symbiotically dependent on them. Part of the charisma of collaborative groups is that they produce political positions that are not easily placed in traditional boxes. ” But what happens when “preservationists” pursue their postmaterial values in the context of property rights and limited but enlightened government?
